5th November

Ken Yu Kai National Championships

On Saturday 5th November, Ken Yu Kai hosted its National Championships at the George H Carnell's Leisure Centre, Davyhulme. All Ken Yu Kai clubs were represented alongside a good representation from the club. The competition ran smoothly and managed to get through 40 different categories, the day was split into two halves, with the Kata sections in the morning and the Kumite sections in the afternoon.

The first category was the cadet Kata (5-9 years, 9th to 7th Kyu), Alex Baker, Dominic Pickard, Alex Newall, Jack Jones and Thomas Wankowicz were representing Prestwich. Both Thomas and Jack managed to get to the final six, but unfortunately could not push into the top 3 after the final round. Shortly after this the cadet Kata (10-15 years, 9th to 7th kyu) was on, Sam Moore and Thomas Faulkner were the representatives from the club and Thomas Picked up the first medal of the day by securing 3rd place (Pictured Right). The second medal was picked up shortly after by Kemi Clarke competing in the Cadet Kata (10-15 years, 6th to 4th Kyu) who also finished in 3rd place (Pictured Left). The final Cadet Kata event was the 10-15 years, brown and black belts, where Eve Whelan was representing the club but unfortunately did not finish in the top 3. Next we were on to the adult section and I was amazed to find that all of our adults were competing in the over 35's (I did ask to see id!), first up was Sarah Chadwick who competed in the open female category and picked up the runner's up medal (Pictured Left). After this both Richard Olver and Derek Whelan competed in the open male category and Richard picked up the 3rd place medal (Pictured Right). The final Kata event the club was in was the Adult Pairs Kata, comprising of Richard Olver and Sarah Chadwick, who both held it together to pick up the runner's up medal. (Pictured Below Left).

Now on to the Kumite, the first section was the Pee Wee (U4') under 10's, 9th to 5th Kyu, with Dominic Pickard and Alex Baker as the club representatives. Both Dominic and Alex picked up joint 3rd medals, of which I must say I was immensely proud of, and slightly over active when coaching! (Pictured Right). Alex Newall was next, in the under 4'6" under 16, 9th to 5th Kyu category, of which was a tough category for him to be in at the tender age of 5, however he gave a good account of himself and was unlucky not to progress through the first round (I just hope he isn't over 4'6" next time!). Next for the club was the Over 5' Boys 9th to 5th Kyu, with both Sam Moore and Thomas Faulkner competing. Thomas had a tough fight in the first round and scored an excellent point, however his opponent just pipped him to it in the end. the performance of the day goes to Sam Moore who came back from many a knock to win Gold, he was head and shoulders above the rest in the category and made my day, well done Sam, one for the future (Pictured Left). Whilst Sam was winning Gold, so was Kemi Clarke in the boys Over 5', 4th Kyu +.

A great day of which I really enjoyed, only entered small numbers from the club, but yet came away with 2 Gold, 3 Silver and 5 Bronze medals. I only wish we had more enter from the club as I feel some of the other categories may have been there for taking, I will enter a bigger team next year. However I am happy in the knowledge I have 2 Ken Yu Kai National Kumite Champions at the club.

10th July

Prestwich Ken Yu Kai Kata Competition

On Sunday 10th July we had the first ever in club Kata competition at St Margaret's Youth and Community centre. There was a last minute request for entries from Eccles karate club via Sensei Ricky Birchall (7th Dan) and as there were only three of them I allowed them to enter. The objective of the competition was to allow students who may not ordinarily compete to try out a competition but in a safe and friendly environment. I was overwhelmed by the support from the club of which meant that the five categories were all competitive. The first category on was the 7 years and under section of which was won by Thomas Wankowicz who beat Finlay Lester in the final with Alex Baker, Freddie Chadwick and Alex Newall finishing joint 3rd. (Pictured Right)

The next section on was the under 16s orange belt and below. This section saw the return of all of the 7s and unders alongside four other competitiors. Once more Thomas Wankowicz shone in this section but ended up runner up after being beat in the final by Thomas Faulkner. Jack Jones and  Finlay Lester finished joint 3rd. (Pictured Left)

Up next were the under 16s purple belt and above. This section included the three competitors from the Eccles club one of them being Saul Whittle who won the section beating Eve Whelan in the final. Rosie Whittle and Daniel Kinsey (both from Eccles) finished joint 3rd. (Pictured Right)

The final individual category of the day was the adults open section of which was won by Sarah Chadwick who beat Derek Whelan in the final with Richard Kane and Richard Olver finishing joint 3rd. (Pictured Left)

This then brought us on to our last category of the day, which was the mixed pairs, this section saw 8 pairs battling it out. This was the section I was most looking forward to as I have seen some of the hard work that has been going on at the club over the last week with the last minute formation of all of these pairs. The pair teams were: Adam Murphy + Alex Newall, Freddie Chadwick + Alex Baker, Thomas Wankowicz + Thomas Faulkner, Richard Kane + Dylan Kane, Kemi Clarke + Patrick Latham, Jack Jones + Finlay Lester, Sarah Chadwick + Eve Whelan and Richard Olver + Derek Whelan. The section was won by Sarah Chadwick and Eve Whelan who beat the father and son duo of Richard Kane and Dylan Kane in the final. Joint 3rd was secured by Adam Murphy + Alex Newall, and Kemi Clarke + Patrick Latham. (Pictured Right)

The star performer of the day was Sarah Chadwick who had a 100% record and took away two gold medals, Sarah also competed in the 'race for life' event at Heaton Park before the competition and is pictured below before the race.

Sarah completed the race in 27 minutes and 50 seconds, Well done!

(She was clearly saving some energy for the comp, not sure about the tutu though!)
