4th November

Ken Yu Kai National Championships

On Sunday 4th November, Ken Yu Kai hosted its National Championships at the George H Carnell's Leisure Centre, Davyhulme. All Ken Yu Kai clubs were represented alongside a good representation from the club. The competition ran smoothly and managed to get through 40 different categories, the day was split into two halves, with the Kata sections in the morning and the Kumite sections in the afternoon.

The first category was the cadet Kata (5-9 years, 9th to 7th Kyu), Francesca Wang-Smith, Jack Moore, Jess Hawkins, Lucca Degisi, Talia Degisi and Nathan French were representing Prestwich. Jess Hawkins went on to win the section and become Ken yu Kai National Champion, great start to the day! The next section on was the cadet Kata (5-9 yeatrs, 6th to 4th Kyu). Thomas Wankowicz, Freddie Chadwick and Liam Raftery were representing the club. Liam finished with a bronze and Thomas with a silver. Next for us was the cadet Kata (10-15 years, 9th to 7th Kyu) with Phoebe Sharpe and Ryan Whelan representing the club, Phoebe narrowly missed out on the Gold but came away with Silver. Sam Moore ws representing the club in the next section, cadet Kata (10-15 years, 6th to 4th Kyu) but unfortunatley did not place. Kemi Carke and Eve Whelan also missed out on a place in the cadet Kata (10-15 years, Brown/Balck Belts). The final individual section in the kata saw Katherine renton representing the club in the Female Senior Kata. We then had three pair Katas (A - Eve/Kemi, B - Sam/Thomas W, and C - Liam/Francesca) unfortunately no medals in this section, the Team were also unlicky in their section also (Thomas W, Liam and Francesca). So a great individual performance start of the day, but the pairs and teams not so great, we must prepare earlier next year!

Now on to the Kumite, the first section for us was the under 4'6" under 16, 9th to 5th Kyu category, of which Liam Raftery, Freddie Chadwick and Lucca Degisi were representing the club. Liam was unlucky to draw the eventual winner in the first round but put a good fight all the same. Lucca progressed and picked up a Bronze medal and well done to Freddie who pulled out all of the stops to reach the final and secure a Silver medal. Thomas Hawkins was up next for the club and competed in the Under 5'0", open section this was a tough category for him to be in and he gave a goof account of himself although unable to progress through the first round. Up next was the defending champ Sam Moore from last year in the same section again, the Over 5' 9th to 5th Section, Sam made an easier job than last year and once more came of the matt Ken Yu Kai national Champion, (Great Ippon Sam!) The final representative of the day was returning champ Kemi Clarke in the Over 5'0 Brown and Black Belts, this was a tough category and for a long time it looked like Kemi had secured Silver at least as he was 2 nil up with only 30 seconds on the clock, a last minute come back saw Kemi settle for a Bronze medal, (hope he keeps his guard up next time!)

A great day of which I really enjoyed, only entered small numbers from the club, but yet came away with 2 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze medals. I only wish we had more enter from the club as I feel some of the other categories may have been there for taking, I will enter a bigger team next year. However once more I am happy in the knowledge I have 2 Ken Yu Kai National Champions at the club.

29th January

Prestwich Ken Yu Kai Open Kata Competition

On Sunday 29th January we had the second Open Kata competition at St Margaret's Youth and Community centre. This was supported by Simister Ken Yu Kai, Failsworth Ken Yu Kai, Mossley Ken Yu Kai and Eccles Ken Yu Kai. The objective of the competition was to allow students who may not ordinarily compete to try out a competition but in a safe and friendly environment. I was overwhelmed by the support from the club of which meant that the seven categories were all competitive. The first category on was the 7 years and under section of which was won by Jack Maguire who beat Joe Schotness in the final with Finlay Lester and Dominic Pickard finishing joint 3rd. (Pictured Right)

The next section on was the under 16s orange belt and below. This section saw the return of all of the 7s and unders alongside other competitiors. Sam Moore ended up runner up after being beat in the final by Matthew Gatenby. Liam Raftery and  Jack Maguire finished joint 3rd. (Pictured Left)

Up next were the under 16s green to purple belt. Kemi Clarke had a great perfromance and secured the winners medal. Charlotte Waywell was runner up, with Annalia Garrett and Charlotte Toner coming joint 3rd. (Pictured Right)

The final cadet individual category of the day was the under 16s brown and black belt section. This was won by Simone Anderson who beat Siobhan Wild in teh final with Daniel Kinsey and Katy Clarke finishing joint 3rd. (Pictured Left)

This then brought us on to the pairs, this section saw 9 pairs battling it out. This was the section I was most looking forward to as I have seen some of the hard work that has been going on at the club over the last week with the last minute formation of all of these pairs. The section was won by Simister 'A' who beat Prestwich 'C' in the final (Sam Moore and Thomas Wankowicz), Prestwich 'F' (Joe Schotness and Kate Schotness) and Prestwich 'E' (Arthur Watson and Callum Cole) finished joint 3rd. (Pictured Right)

Next onto the adult categories, first up was the white to purple belt section which was won by Kiran Bauluck who beat Debbie Clarke in the final.   (Pictured Left)

The final category of the day was the adults brown and black belt section of which was decided by round robin. Richard Olver won, Derek Whelan came second and Sarah Chadwick was third.  (Pictured Right)
